Hooked on golf? Well, you’re not the only one! With 24 million golfers in America today, it’s one of the most popular sports in the entire country.
But that doesn’t make it easy! As any beginner knows, becoming proficient at golf takes time, effort, and lots of hard work. The good news is that there are numerous steps you can take to speed up the learning process.
Are you trying to get better at golf? Let us help. Keep reading for our favorite golf tricks that’ll elevate your game in no time.
Mix Things Up
Hitting ball after ball on the range is a great way to perfect your swing. However, think about how many novel scenarios you end up in on an actual round of golf. You might be in a bunker, behind a bush, or stuck in the rough.
The result? Practicing the same shot every time will only get you so far (especially in the controlled environment of the range). Instead, try putting yourself in every conceivable position in practice so that you can master the different shots/swings you’ll need in a game.
Don’t Forgo Putting Practice
Most golfing beginners prioritize the ‘glamorous’ shots in practice. They break out their drivers, woods, and irons, and try to hit the ball as far and straight as possible. Feel free to do the same!
However, don’t forget to work on your putting too. Get onto the green and hit putt after putt from different distances and angles. You’ll be amazed at the improvement you’ll see on your scorecards (whether you’re using a golf scorecard app or paper score sheet) when you perfect this part of the game.
Assess the Strike Point
The quality of your shots depends a lot on where the ball makes contact with the clubface. Otherwise known as the “impact location”, it can be the difference between a wild slice and an arrow down the fairway. Yet very few golfers (even experienced ones) take the time to work out where this impact location falls on their clubs.
Don’t be like those people! Next time you’re at the range, try applying a dry-erase marker to your balls. You’ll be able to look down after each shot, see the imprint of the ball on your clubface, and identify where you struck it as a result.
Use Your Torso for Power
Another common beginner mistake pertains to the generation of power. Many learners assume the strength comes from their shoulders, arms, and wrists. In reality, the majority of the power in your strokes will come from your torso.
Shoulders, wrists, and arms do make a difference. But rotating your torso through the shot is the best way to see your shots soar. Work on that rotational motion and it won’t be long before you start hitting the ball further.
